Getting started
Turning 65 in Columbus OH
Turning 65 in Columbus OH kicks off a Medicare clock whether you're ready or not. You get a seven-month Initial Enrollment Period: three months before your birthday month, the birthday month itself, and three months after it.
Sign up in the three months before your birthday and coverage starts the first of your birthday month. Wait too long and your start date slips. That's why we tell clients from German Village to Dublin to start talking with us around age 64 and a half.
- A 7-month window built around your birthday
- Different rules apply if you're still on the job
- One guaranteed Medigap application window
- Free, local, no-pressure guidance

Timeline
A month-by-month plan for turning 65 in Columbus OH
- 1
3 to 6 months out
Decide if you'll start Part B now or hold off because of active employer coverage. Pull together your current doctor and prescription list.
- 2
3 months before
Apply for Part A and Part B through Social Security if benefits haven't started already. Already collecting Social Security? Your card ships automatically.
- 3
2 months before
Pick a lane: Original Medicare paired with Medigap and Part D, or a Medicare Advantage plan. Check the plan's network and drug tiers before deciding.
- 4
1 month before
File the paperwork so your cards land before coverage starts. Confirm your old coverage doesn't lapse in the gap.
- 5
Right after your birthday
Your six-month Medigap open enrollment window starts the day Part B begins. This is the only stretch where a health condition can't get you turned down.
Still working?
An employer plan changes your timeline
Still working, or is your spouse, and does the employer plan cover 20 or more people? You can usually put off Part B without a penalty and stay on the group plan. Most people still sign up for Part A since it's typically free, unless you're funding an HSA, in which case any part of Medicare shuts off HSA contributions.
Once that job ends, an eight-month Special Enrollment Period opens for Part B. COBRA and retiree coverage don't stretch that window. Getting this wrong is the single costliest mistake we see, and you can run the numbers yourself with our Part B penalty calculator.
Smaller employers work differently
Under 20 employees, Medicare typically becomes your primary coverage at 65, so delaying Part B can leave real gaps. Check with HR before you decide either way.
Choosing
Two paths once your window opens
- Original Medicare + Medigap + Part D: any doctor who accepts Medicare, a higher premium, predictable bills
- Medicare Advantage: lower premium, a defined network, copays as you go, added perks like dental and vision
- Both still require your monthly Part B premium
- Comparing the two costs nothing with an independent local agent
