Medicare Plans

Medicare Supplement (Medigap) in Columbus, OH

Original Medicare covers most of your hospital and doctor bills, but leaves gaps. Medicare Supplement Columbus OH plans, known as Medigap, fill in the deductibles, coinsurance and copays Medicare doesn't pay, so your yearly costs stay close to fixed.

Every Medigap plan is standardized by letter. A Plan G from one insurer pays the exact same benefits as a Plan G from another. What actually differs is the premium, the service, and how the carrier handles rate hikes down the road.

  • Keep any doctor who takes Medicare
  • One steady monthly premium, few surprises
  • No referrals, no provider network
  • Coverage travels with you anywhere in the U.S.

How it works

Medicare pays its share first, Medigap covers the rest

You stay on Original Medicare (Part A and Part B) as your primary coverage. Visit OhioHealth Riverside Methodist, OSU Wexner Medical Center or any clinic in Franklin County that takes Medicare, and the claim routes to Medicare first. Whatever's left gets sent straight to your Medigap carrier, so most members never see a bill past the yearly Part B deductible.

Because there's no network, you never have to ask if a specialist is "in plan." If they take Medicare, you're covered, whether that's a clinic near Easton Town Center or a doctor's office while visiting family out of state. Medigap skips drug coverage entirely, so most people pair it with a standalone Part D drug plan.

The benefits stay put, only the rate moves

Medigap benefits are locked in by law, so a rate increase is the only variable to watch. We re-shop your Plan G or Plan N every year to make sure you're not paying a loyalty tax for sticking around.

Medigap doesn't touch prescriptions

Pair it with a separate Part D plan. Skipping that when you're first eligible can trigger a late penalty that follows you for life.

Timing

Your enrollment window matters more than any single feature

For six months starting the month your Part B begins, you can buy any Medigap plan sold in Ohio with zero health questions. That window is the only time a diagnosis can't raise your price or get your application turned down.

Once it closes, Ohio carriers can use medical underwriting. Most applicants still qualify, but things like a recent heart procedure, oxygen use or insulin-dependent diabetes can narrow your options. If you're turning 65, start this conversation about three months ahead of time.

  • A six-month guaranteed-issue window opens with your Part B
  • No network, no referrals, no annual plan shopping required
  • Guaranteed renewable as long as your premium is paid
  • Special guaranteed-issue rights apply if a plan exits your area

Is it right for you?

Who tends to pick Medigap around Central Ohio

  • You see several specialists

Cardiology, oncology or orthopedic visits add up quickly under copay-based plans. Medigap keeps those costs flat all year.
  • You want a fixed monthly cost

A higher, known premium beats an unpredictable out-of-pocket bill for a lot of retirees living on a set income.
  • You travel often or split your year elsewhere

Coverage follows you to any provider in the U.S. that accepts Medicare, no out-of-area network to worry about.

If a lower monthly bill and built-in dental or fitness perks matter more to you, weigh this against Medicare Advantage in Columbus before you decide.

Underwriting

Applying outside a protected window

Inside your six-month Medigap open enrollment window, or when a guaranteed-issue right applies, health questions don't come up. Outside those periods, Ohio carriers can underwrite: they'll ask about diagnoses, procedures, medications and pending tests, and they can decline you or charge more.

Guaranteed-issue rights kick in for specific situations, your Advantage plan leaves the service area, an employer plan ends, a carrier misrepresented something, or you're inside the 12-month trial right after first joining an Advantage plan at 65. Those windows are narrow and easy to miss, which is why we ask about your health history before we start an application instead of after it's denied.

When underwriting looks like a likely obstacle, we say so up front and look at Medicare Advantage instead of letting you collect a decline on your record.

Rates

Rate increases, travel, and shopping the market each year

Why Medigap premiums move

Benefits are locked in by law, so price is the only lever. Ohio carriers typically price by attained age, meaning your premium climbs as you get older and again whenever the carrier files a general rate hike. Two companies selling identical Plan G coverage can end up far apart in price after five years.

We recheck your premium every year against the other carriers we work with. Switching usually means passing underwriting again, so it's a move to make while you're healthy, not after a diagnosis lands.

Travel and access

Backed by Original Medicare, Medigap works with any provider nationwide who accepts Medicare. No out-of-area rule, no referral, and no network to check before seeing a specialist while visiting family in another state.

Some Medigap plans include limited foreign travel emergency coverage. It's capped and carries its own deductible, useful, but not a substitute for real travel medical insurance on a longer trip abroad.

Common questions

What Columbus-area clients ask before applying

When should I apply?
Roughly three months before your Part B start date, so your six-month guaranteed-issue window gets used rather than wasted. Check the turning 65 timeline for the exact dates.
Do I still need a Part D plan?
Yes. Medigap never includes prescriptions. Pair it with a standalone Part D plan or risk a late-enrollment penalty that sticks around for good.
Can my Medigap plan be cancelled on me?
Not for health reasons. Medigap policies are guaranteed renewable as long as you keep paying the premium.
Is Plan F still around?
Only for people who became Medicare-eligible before January 1, 2020. Everyone else compares Plan G, Plan N and high-deductible Plan G.
Does the carrier I pick change my benefits?
No. A Plan G is a Plan G everywhere. What differs is the premium, the rate-increase history and how easy the carrier is to deal with on a claim.
